The new private residence in this property presented as a challenge due to its location on a 45 degree sloping site.

During the process, the house developed into a minimalist composition while still retaining a close relationship with the beach.  The contours of the hill allowed the building to step into the valley and protrude on the ridges, this formed the basic exterior building line. Floor levels step up and around following the contours.

A sheltered rear deck court is positioned to allow a sea view though the family / dining room then extending out over the valley. The Pohutukawa trees are an essential part of the form of the building and its material. The trees sweep up the side of the house and the silver under-side of the leaves are exposed. The roof continues this movement with its gentle curve, and exposed rafters replicate the branches. The silver finish of the roof complements the underside of the leaves.
